ASHE Georgia Section History
Frances Gallagher began the Georgia Section of ASHE in 1996. She had been an active member of ASHE in Florida, and believed the organization to be a perfect fit for Georgia’s emerging and rapidly growing highway design and construction industry. She organized a committee of colleagues, including Georgia Department of Transportation employees, private consultants, roadway contractors and others to promote the idea of a Georgia Chapter. The first meeting was held in 1997 to test the interest and was an overwhelming success. The Georgia Section of ASHE officially chartered on February 5, 1998 with over 80 charter members and 33 charter firms. 110 people attended the charter meeting.
Since its inception, the membership has grown to make the Georgia Section one of the largest ASHE Chapters. The Chapter has won the Gene G. Smith Award for the largest increase in membership for the past 4 years! Our membership has increased 200% in the past 5 years with 91% of the membership coming from the private sector, 8% working in the public sector such as GDOT and local County Governments, and 1% are retired. 2011 is another milestone year with the addition of the ASHE Student Chapter at Georgia Institute of Technology.
The Georgia Chapter is committed to giving back to our community. We have two scholarship funds established that award a total of 3 scholarships each year to collegiate undergrads from local engineering schools each year. Proceeds from our annual golf and bowling tournaments help fund these scholarships. 2009 marked our first Holiday Gathering where each attendee contributed a new toy to be donated to the Toys for Tots drive.

The Georgia Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers is pleased to sponsor a student chapter at Georgia Tech. Student membership is only available for this school at this time. However, the Georgia Section has a long history of supporting Georgia students and hopes that other institutions will wish to organize their own ASHE student chapters. For more information about chartering a student chapter at your school, please contact Kevin Riggs.
If you are interested in joining (or rejoining) ASHE, please fill out either the online membership or printable forms and submit your membership dues of $55.00 ($20 for students). Printable forms and payments (made out to "ASHE Georgia Section" may be sent to:
